Tips for spelling and proof-reading

Proof-reading

Don't forget to proof-read your writing each day.  You should read through your work carefully and check for the following:

  • Have you used the correct punctuation?
  • Are there any easy spelling mistakes you have made and can correct?
  • Does it make sense or are there any words you have missed out?

If there are words you're not sure you've spelt correctly, pick a maximum of three words and try the following spelling strategy:

Have a go spelling strategy:

  • Say the word out loud.
  • Clap the syllables out.
  •  Carefully sound out each syllable.
  • Are there any spelling patterns you know that might help you?
  • Once you've done this, have a go at writing the word out.  You might want to try a few different ways of writing it - which one looks right to you?

Once you've had a go, either look the word up in a dictionary or ask a grown-up which one is correct.  You can then write the word out three times to help you remember it.
